考えている集合をすべて部分集合として含む、議論の土台になる集合。ふつう U で表す。
The set of everything under consideration in a given problem, usually written U; every set in the problem is a subset of it.
例文
話し言葉 Let's take the universe to be the integers from 1 to 10. 全体集合を 1 から 10 までの整数としよう。
書き言葉・答案 Let U = {1, 2, 3, …, 10} be the universal set, and let A = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10}. Find the complement of A. U = {1, 2, 3, …, 10} を全体集合とし、A = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10} とする。A の補集合を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 「全体集合」は共通テストの数学I 第1問（令和 3〜8 年度ほか）が「全体集合 U を…とする」と書く語で、学習指導要領解説には出てこない。
- 補集合は全体集合を決めてはじめて決まる。同じ A でも U が変われば補集合も変わる。
- universal set という言い方は米国の高校課程の参照（CED・OpenStax・IM・CK-12）に 0 件。CK-12 Geometry 2.10 Negative Statements はベン図の全体を the universe of all things と呼び、Levin は the universe 𝒰（0.2.2・5.1 Sets）、論理の文脈では universe of discourse（1.6）と言う。英語版 Wikipedia の同じ概念の記事は「Universe (mathematics)」で、「Universal set」はすべての集合を含む集合（通常の集合論には存在しない）という別の概念。
