いくつかの具体例に共通する規則性から、一般的な結論を推測する考え方。推測した結論は、証明するまで正しいとは限らない。
Reasoning that looks at specific examples, notices a pattern, and makes a general conjecture. The conclusion is only a guess until it is proved.
例文
話し言葉 Every example so far works, but that's just inductive reasoning. We still need a proof. ここまでの例は全部成り立つけど、それは帰納的推論にすぎない。まだ証明が要る。
書き言葉・答案 Use inductive reasoning to predict the next number in the pattern 3, 7, 11, 15, …. 帰納的推論を用いて、3, 7, 11, 15, … の次の数を予想せよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 数学的帰納法（proof by induction）は名前に「帰納」が付くが演繹的な証明であり、帰納的推論ではない。
- 帰納的推論で得た予想は、反例（counterexample）が 1 つあれば否定される。
- 用例コーパスには inductive reasoning は出てこない。CK-12 Geometry は 21 件（2.4 Reasoning Types・2.5 Inductive Reasoning from Patterns ほか）、Levin の本では 4.5 Proof by Induction に 1 件。
