2 変数関数 z = f(x, y) で、f(x, y) = k（定数）となる点が xy 平面上に描く曲線。
For z = f(x, y), the curve in the xy-plane along which f(x, y) equals a constant k.
例文
話し言葉 Level curves bunched together mean the surface is steep there. 等高線が詰まっているところは、曲面が急。
書き言葉・答案 Sketch several level curves of f(x, y) = x² + 4y². f(x, y) = x² + 4y² の等高線をいくつかかけ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 等高線を並べた図は contour map（書き言葉で使う）。contour line は話し言葉・書き言葉とも少ない。
- 3 変数関数で f(x, y, z) = k となる面は level surface。
