order matters

Treating different orders of the same objects as different outcomes; when order matters you count permutations, and when it does not you count combinations.

Order matters here — first place and second place are different prizes — so it's a permutation.
If order doesn't matter, divide by 3! to get rid of the repeats.
Since the order does not matter, the number of ways to choose 3 of the 10 books is C(10, 3) = 120.
