The curved symbols ( ) placed around part of an expression to group it, showing that the part inside is worked out first.
In 4(2 + 3), do what's inside the parentheses first, so that's 4 times 5, or 20. 4(2 + 3)
Insert one pair of parentheses to make the statement true: 8 − 3 × 2 + 1 = 11.
