図形をある点のまわりに 0° より大きく 360° より小さい角度だけ回転させると、もとの図形にぴったり重なる性質。180° の回転で重なる点対称はその特別な場合である。
The property of a figure that maps onto itself when it is rotated about a point by an angle greater than 0° and less than 360°. Point symmetry is the special case of a 180° rotation.
例文
話し言葉 A regular hexagon has rotational symmetry: turn it 60 degrees about its center and it lands right on top of itself. 正六角形は回転対称だ。中心のまわりに 60° 回すと、もとの図形にぴったり重なる。
書き言葉・答案 Does a regular pentagon have rotational symmetry? If so, find the smallest angle of rotation that maps it onto itself. 正五角形は回転対称か。回転対称ならば、もとの図形に重なる最小の回転角を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 小6 の点対称（180° の回転で重なる）は英語で point symmetry。rotational symmetry はそれより広く、120° や 72° で重なる図形も含む。
- 0° や 360° の回転ならどの図形も重なるので、それだけでは rotational symmetry があるとは言わない。正 n 角形は 360°/n の回転で重なる。
- 用例コーパスでは話し言葉・書き言葉とも少ない（話し言葉はすべて 3Blue1Brown、書き言葉は OpenStax Calculus）。CK-12 Geometry では 8.4 Rotation Symmetry に 14 件。
