英語の round は「丸める」一般を指し、round up（切り上げ）や round down（切り捨て）も含む。四捨五入に当たるのは round to the nearest …（最も近い値に丸める）の形で、round to the nearest tenth は小数第 1 位までの概数にすること。日本語は捨てる位（小数第 2 位を四捨五入）を言い、英語は残す位（the nearest tenth）を言うので、指す位がずれる。
定義
ある位までの概数にするとき、その 1 つ下の位の数字が 0〜4 なら切り捨て、5〜9 なら切り上げる。
To replace a number with a nearby, simpler number at a given place value, such as the nearest ten or the nearest tenth. If the next digit is 5 or more, round up; otherwise, round down.
例文
話し言葉 Round 3.47 to the nearest tenth: the 7 means you round up, so it's 3.5. 3.47 の小数第 2 位を四捨五入しよう。7 だから切り上げて 3.5。
書き言葉・答案 A circle has a radius of 4 cm. Find its circumference, and round your answer to the nearest hundredth. 半径 4 cm の円の周の長さを求め、小数第 3 位を四捨五入して答えよ。
話し言葉 You can't rent 3.2 buses, so round up to 4. バスを 3.2 台は借りられないから、切り上げて 4 台。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 「小数第 2 位を四捨五入する」は round to the nearest tenth（小数第 1 位まで残す）。日本語は捨てる位、英語は残す位を言うので、位が 1 つずれる。
- round は「丸める」一般で、round up（切り上げ）、round down（切り捨て）にも使う。四捨五入に当たるのは round to the nearest … の形。
- 残す位の言い方は、nearest tenth が小数第 1 位、nearest hundredth が小数第 2 位、nearest whole number が整数（一の位）、nearest ten が十の位。
