定義
位取り記数法で数を書いたとき、各位に並ぶ 1 つ 1 つの数字。「3 桁の数」は数字が 3 つ並ぶ数を言う。

例文
話し言葉 So we want a three-digit number whose digits add up to 12. つまり、各位の数の和が 12 になる 3 桁の数を探したい。
書き言葉・答案 How many four-digit positive integers have no repeated digits? 各位の数字がすべて異なる 4 桁の正の整数はいくつあるか。
書き言葉・答案 Round the answer to two decimal places, and keep at least four significant digits along the way. 答えは小数第 2 位までに丸め、途中の計算は有効数字 4 桁以上で行え。

言い間違えやすいところ
- digit は「数字」そのもの（0〜9 の 1 つ）。「桁」の位置のほうは place（一の位 = ones place）で、「桁数」は number of digits。
- 「3 桁の数」は a three-digit number。形容詞として使うときは digit を複数形にしない（three digits long とは言うが a three-digits number とは言わない）。
- 十の位の数字が a、一の位の数字が b の 2 桁の数は 10a + b と表す（a two-digit number with tens digit a and ones digit b）。
