日本語の「位」は単独でも言えるが、英語の place はふつう ones place ／ tens place ／ hundreds place のように位の名前と組で使う。place value は「位取り」、つまり数字の値が置かれた位で決まるという考え方を指す。小数の位は tenths place（小数第 1 位）、hundredths place（小数第 2 位）と言う。

定義
位取り記数法で、数字が置かれる位置。一の位・十の位・百の位のように、位置によって数字の重みが決まる。

話し言葉 What digit is in the tens place of 4,735? 4735 の十の位の数字は何？
話し言葉 Carry the one over to the hundreds place. 繰り上がった 1 を百の位に足してね。
書き言葉・答案 Let a be the digit in the hundreds place, b the digit in the tens place, and c the digit in the ones place. 百の位の数を a、十の位の数を b、一の位の数を c とする。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 書き言葉では OpenStax Prealgebra が位取りの章で place value を多く使い、ones place の形と並ぶ。
- 「一の位の数」は the digit in the ones place（the ones digit とも言える）。the one place と単数にしない。
