定義
母集団について立てる主張で、標本のデータを使って検定する対象になるもの。仮説検定では帰無仮説と対立仮説の 2 つを立てる。
A claim about a population, usually about a parameter, that is tested using sample data. A hypothesis test sets up two of them: the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis.
例文
話し言葉 Before you look at the data, write down both hypotheses in terms of the parameter, not the sample statistic. データを見る前に、2 つの仮説を標本の統計量ではなく母数を使って書こう。
書き言葉・答案 A coin is tossed 100 times and lands heads up 61 times. State the hypotheses for testing whether the coin is more likely to land heads up. 硬貨を 100 回投げたところ、表が 61 回出た。この硬貨は表が出やすいといえるかを検定するための仮説を立てよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 証明の「仮定」（p ならば q の p）も英語では hypothesis で、別の見出し hypothesis。統計の検定の話か、証明の話かで見分ける。用例コーパスの hypothesis 単独は大半がこの統計の意味（MIT OCW・講義ノートには帰納法や定理の仮定の意味もある）。
- 複数形は hypotheses。仮説は H₀ ／ Hₐ のように母数（μ、p など）で書き、標本平均などの値では書かない。
- 用例コーパスでは話し言葉・書き言葉ともよく出てくる。話し言葉は Khan Academy が中心、書き言葉は大半が OpenStax Introductory Statistics。AP Statistics の CED では hypothesis が 195 件、hypotheses が 40 件。
