証明の「仮定」は、論理・定理の文脈では hypothesis（p ならば q の p）、米国の Geometry の答案では Given（2 列証明の最初の行の見出し）と言い、1 語に決まらない。CK-12 Geometry は hypothesis と呼ぶ（2.11 If Then Statements・2.12 Converse Inverse and Contrapositive Statements、hypothesis and conclusion などの形で 8 件）。
定義
命題「p ならば q」の p の部分。証明では、正しいものとして出発点に使ってよい条件を指す。
The "if" part p of a statement "if p, then q." In a proof, it is the condition you are allowed to assume from the start.
例文
話し言葉 You're allowed to use the hypothesis, so start by writing down what's given. 仮定は使っていいんだから、まず与えられていることを書き出そう。
書き言葉・答案 In the statement "If a triangle is equilateral, then it is isosceles," identify the hypothesis and the conclusion. 命題「三角形が正三角形ならば、二等辺三角形である」の仮定と結論を答えよ。

言い間違えやすいところ
- 統計の「仮説」（数I データの分析の仮説検定）も英語では hypothesis で、別の語。用例コーパスの hypothesis 単独はほとんどがこの統計の意味。
- 米国の Geometry の 2 列証明では、仮定を Given:、示すことを Prove: という見出しで書き、hypothesis とは書かない。
- 証明の仮定の意味の hypothesis は、用例コーパスでは hypothesis and conclusion などの形で話し言葉にわずかに出てくるだけで、書き言葉には出てこない。
- 統計の「仮説」（null hypothesis などの hypothesis）は別の見出し statistical-hypothesis。英語はどちらも hypothesis なので、証明の話か統計の検定の話かで見分ける。
