定義
仮定と、すでに正しいとわかっている定義・定理から、筋道を立てて結論が正しいことを示す論証。
A chain of reasoning that shows a statement must be true, starting from its hypotheses and using definitions and results already established.
例文
話し言葉 Let's start the proof by writing down what we're given. まず仮定を書き出すところから証明を始めよう。
書き言葉・答案 Complete the proof by giving a reason for each step. 各段階の根拠を書いて、証明を完成させよ。
書き言葉・答案 In this proof, the hypothesis is that n is even and the conclusion is that n² is even. この証明では、仮定は「n は偶数」、結論は「n² は偶数」である。

言い間違えやすいところ
- 名詞の「証明」は proof、動詞の「証明する」は prove。発音（Merriam-Webster: ˈprüf と ˈprüv）も綴りも近いので取り違えない。
- 証明を書くときの「仮定」は hypothesis（given とも）、「結論」は conclusion。証明の終わりの印には ∎ や Q.E.D. を使う。
