2 つの図形が、平行移動・回転・裏返しによってぴったり重なること。形も大きさも同じ。
Having exactly the same size and shape, so that one figure can be moved onto the other by translations, rotations, and reflections.
例文
話し言葉 Congruent means same size and same shape: you can slide, turn, or flip one onto the other. 合同というのは、大きさも形も同じということ。ずらしたり回したり裏返したりして重ねられる。
話し言葉 Two sides and the angle between them match, so these triangles are congruent. 2 辺とその間の角がそれぞれ等しいから、この 2 つの三角形は合同だ。
書き言葉・答案 Prove that triangle ABM is congruent to triangle ACM. △ABM ≡ △ACM であることを証明せよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 合同の記号は日本では ≡（中学校学習指導要領の〔用語・記号〕）、英語では ≅（CK-12 Geometry・IM）。英語で ≡ は恒等式や整数の合同（a ≡ b (mod n)）に使う。
- 「合同」は名詞でも使うが、英語の congruent は形容詞（are congruent ／ is congruent to）。名詞は congruence。
- congruent は整数の合同（mod）にも使う。
