定義
図形やグラフ上のすべての点を、同じ向きに同じ距離だけ動かす移動。点 (x, y) は (x + a, y + b) に移る。
A transformation that moves every point of a figure or graph the same distance in the same direction, sending (x, y) to (x + a, y + b).
例文
話し言葉 So this is a horizontal shift: the whole parabola moves 3 units to the right. これは x 軸方向の平行移動で、放物線全体が右に 3 動く。
書き言葉・答案 The graph of y = (x − 3)² + 2 is the graph of y = x² shifted 3 units to the right and 2 units up. y = (x − 3)² + 2 のグラフは、y = x² のグラフを x 軸方向に 3、y 軸方向に 2 だけ平行移動したものである。
書き言葉・答案 Under the translation (x, y) → (x + 4, y − 1), find the image of triangle ABC. 平行移動 (x, y) → (x + 4, y − 1) による三角形 ABC の像を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 日本の「x 軸方向に p、y 軸方向に q だけ平行移動」は、英語では向きで言う（shift 3 units to the right and 2 units up）。y = f(x) のグラフの平行移動は y = f(x − p) + q で、x − p の符号と右向きの対応に注意。
- 関数のグラフと図形で言い方が分かれる。関数のグラフの平行移動は、用例コーパス（講義・OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry ほか）では shift（vertical ／ horizontal shift・shifted … units など）が話し言葉・書き言葉とも translation の形よりずっと多い。図形の平行移動は、IM の Grade 8 と Geometry で translation（65 件・129 件。両方の glossary の見出し）、動詞は translate（40 件・95 件）で、shift は 2 件・4 件しかない。IM Algebra 2 はグラフにも translation ／ translate を使う（28 件・40 件、shift は 11 件）。答案で図形を動かすときは translation、グラフを「右に 3」と言うときは shift が無難。
- 平行移動ベクトル（どの向きにどれだけ動かすか）は translation vector で、⟨a, b⟩ のように成分で書く。
