放物線がそれに関して線対称になる直線。y = a(x − p)² + q のグラフでは直線 x = p で、頂点を通る。
The line a parabola is symmetric about. For y = a(x − h)² + k it is the vertical line x = h, which passes through the vertex.
例文
話し言葉 The axis of symmetry always passes through the vertex, so for this parabola it's x equals 3. 軸は頂点を通るので、ここでは x = 3。

言い間違えやすいところ
- 日本語は「軸」だけで放物線の軸を指すが、英語で axis とだけ言うと x 軸・y 軸（x-axis, y-axis）と紛れる。放物線の軸は axis of symmetry と言う。
- line of symmetry は図形一般の対称の軸（エントリ line-of-reflection）にも使う。
- 軸の方程式は x = p の形の直線の式で答える。y = p と書き間違えない。
