「〜倍」は、× の読み（3 times 4）と同じ times を数の後に置いて言う。「A は B の 3 倍」は A is three times B で、数や量を比べるときは three times as many as B ／ three times as long as B の形になる。

定義
ある量が、もとにする量のいくつ分に当たるかを表す言い方。b が a の k 倍のとき、b = ka となる。
Used after a number to compare two quantities by multiplication: if b is k times a, then b = ka.
例文
話し言葉 If Mia has 4 stickers and Jake has three times as many, Jake has 12, and twice as many would be 8. ミアのシールが 4 枚で、ジェイクがその 3 倍持っているなら、ジェイクは 12 枚。2 倍なら 8 枚だね。
書き言葉・答案 Find the width of a rectangle whose length is three times its width and whose perimeter is 48 cm. 横の長さが縦の長さの 3 倍で、周の長さが 48 cm の長方形がある。縦の長さを求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 「3 倍する」は動詞で multiply by 3 ／ triple と言う。
- 2 倍は two times のほか twice（twice as long as）とも言う。半分（0.5 倍）は half、1.5 倍は 1.5 times。
- 「B の 3 倍」は three times B、three times as many as B の順で、「B の」に当たる語が times の後ろに来る。
