話し言葉 The ratio of boys to girls is 3 to 4, so for every 3 boys there are 4 girls. 男子と女子の人数の比は 3 : 4。男子 3 人につき女子 4 人ということだ。
書き言葉・答案 Find the number of red marbles in a bag of 40 red and blue marbles if the ratio of red marbles to blue marbles is 5 : 3. 袋の中に赤玉と青玉が合わせて 40 個あり、赤玉と青玉の個数の比は 5 : 3 である。赤玉の個数を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
a : b は a to b と読む（3 : 4 は three to four）。a/b と分数の形で書くこともある。
「a と b の比」は the ratio of a to b と言い、of の後に a : b の前の数、to の後に後ろの数を置く。
等比数列の公比 common ratio（エントリ common-ratio）や比判定法 ratio test（エントリ ratio-test）にも ratio が出てくるが、別の用語。
