定義

長さ・重さ・時間などの量を測るときの基準にする決まった量。cm、kg、秒など。

A fixed amount used as a standard for measuring a quantity, such as a centimeter, a kilogram, or a second.

話し言葉 Your answer is 12, but 12 what? Always write the unit, like centimeters or meters. 答えは 12。でも 12 何？センチなのかメートルなのか、単位を必ず書こう。

書き言葉・答案 A rectangle is 8 cm long and 5 cm wide. Find its perimeter, and include the unit in your answer. 長さ 8 cm、幅 5 cm の長方形の周の長さを求めよ。答えには単位を付けること。

面積を 1 辺 1 の正方形いくつ分で答えるときは square units（エントリ square-units）、体積を 1 辺 1 の立方体いくつ分で答えるときは cubic units（エントリ cubic-units）と言う。
unit circle（単位円）・unit vector（単位ベクトル）の unit は「大きさ 1 の」という意味で、量を測る単位とは別の語（エントリ unit-circle、unit-vector）。
