座標平面で、原点で x 軸と垂直に交わる縦の数直線。上へ行くほど値が大きくなる。

The vertical number line on the coordinate plane. It crosses the x-axis at the origin, and its numbers increase going up.

例文

話し言葉 This point is right on the y-axis, so its x-coordinate is 0. この点はちょうど y 軸上にあるから、x 座標は 0 だね。
書き言葉・答案 Find the coordinates of the point where the line y = 4x − 3 crosses the y-axis. 直線 y = 4x − 3 と y 軸との交点の座標を求めよ。

言い間違えやすいところ

  • y 軸は直線 x = 0 のこと（y = 0 ではない）。y 軸上の点は x 座標が 0。
  • y 軸との交点は y-intercept。答えは点 (0, −3) のことも、y 座標の −3 だけのこともある。
