座標平面で、原点を通る横の数直線。右へ行くほど値が大きくなる。

The horizontal number line on the coordinate plane. It crosses the y-axis at the origin, and its numbers increase to the right.

話し言葉 Every point on the x-axis has a y-coordinate of 0. x 軸上の点は、どれも y 座標が 0 だよ。

書き言葉・答案 Find the coordinates of the point where the line y = −2x + 8 crosses the x-axis. 直線 y = −2x + 8 と x 軸との交点の座標を求めよ。

複数形は axes で、発音はアクシーズ（Merriam-Webster: ˈak-ˌsēz）。斧（ax ／ axe、ˈaks）の複数形も axes と綴る（Merriam-Webster）。
x 軸は直線 y = 0 のこと（x = 0 ではない）。
x 軸との交点は x-intercept。答えは点 (4, 0) のことも、x 座標の 4 だけのこともある（エントリ x-intercept）。
