式と読み方

a x squared plus b x plus c is greater than zero for all x if and only if a is positive and b squared minus four a c is negative

変数がどんな値をとっても、式や関数の値が 0 より大きいこと。二次式 ax² + bx + c がつねに正となるのは a > 0 かつ判別式 D < 0 のとき。

Greater than zero for every value of the variable. A quadratic ax² + bx + c is always positive exactly when a > 0 and its discriminant is negative.

話し言葉 The parabola opens up and never touches the x-axis, so this quadratic is always positive. 放物線は上に開いていて x 軸と共有点をもたないから、この二次式はつねに正だ。

書き言葉・答案 Find the range of values of k for which x² + 2kx + 4 is always positive. x² + 2kx + 4 がつねに正となるような定数 k の値の範囲を求めよ。

書き言葉・答案 Since a = 1 > 0 and the discriminant is negative, f(x) is always positive. a = 1 > 0 かつ判別式が負だから、f(x) はつねに正である。

「つねに 0 以上」（≧ 0）は always positive ではない。0 になる点がある二次式（D = 0）は正ではないので、条件は D < 0 で D ≦ 0 ではない。
「すべての実数 x について」は for all x ／ for every real number x と添えて書くと答案で紛れない。
