定義
方程式の解のうち、実数であるもの。二次方程式 ax² + bx + c = 0 は判別式 b² − 4ac ≧ 0 のとき実数解をもつ。
A solution of an equation that is a real number; the quadratic equation ax² + bx + c = 0 has real solutions exactly when b² − 4ac ≥ 0.
例文
話し言葉 The discriminant is negative, so there are no real solutions. 判別式が負なので、実数解はない。
話し言葉 If b² − 4ac is positive, you get two distinct real roots. b² − 4ac が正なら、異なる 2 つの実数解をもつ。
書き言葉・答案 Find the range of k for which x² + 2x + k = 0 has two distinct real solutions. x² + 2x + k = 0 が異なる 2 つの実数解をもつような k の値の範囲を求めよ。
書き言葉・答案 Show that the equation x² − x + 1 = 0 has no real roots. 方程式 x² − x + 1 = 0 は実数解をもたないことを示せ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 「実数解をもたない」は has no real solutions（has no real roots）。複素数の解まで考える場面で real を落として has no solutions と言うと、解がまったく無い意味になる。
- 「異なる 2 つの実数解」は two distinct real solutions。distinct を落とすと重解の場合と区別できない。
- 英語では方程式の解を solution、多項式の根を root と使い分け、実数解にも real solution と real root の 2 つが当たる。関数の零点として OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry・Precalculus は real zero と書く（各 30 件前後）。
