定義
直線が円とただ 1 つの点だけを共有するとき、直線は円に接するという。2 つの円が 1 点だけを共有するときにも使う。
Describes a line that touches a circle at exactly one point. Two circles that touch at exactly one point are also tangent to each other.
例文
話し言葉 See how the line just touches the circle here and doesn't cut through it? It's tangent to the circle at P. 直線がここで円にちょうどふれていて、円の中を通っていないでしょ？ この直線は点 P で円に接しているんだ。
書き言葉・答案 Construct a line that is tangent to circle O at point A. 点 A で円 O に接する直線を作図せよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- tangent は形容詞として使う。「接する」は is tangent to で、接する相手は to、接点は at で示す（The line is tangent to the circle at P.）。
- 名詞の tangent は接線（tangent line、エントリ tangent-line）のことも、三角比の tan（エントリ tangent）のこともある。接点は point of tangency（エントリ point-of-tangency）。
- 円と 2 点で交わる直線は tangent ではない（接線は円と 1 点だけを共有する）。「交わる」は intersect（エントリ intersect）。
