日本語の「消える」は項がなくなった結果を言い、英語の cancel out は 2 つの項が「打ち消し合う」ことを言う。加減法で y の項どうしが打ち消し合うとき（the y's cancel out）にも、約分で分子と分母の共通因数が消えるとき（cancel）にも使う。
定義
2 つの項や因数が打ち消し合って、式からなくなること。3y と −3y のように符号だけが違う項を足したときや、分数の分子と分母の共通因数を約分したときに言う。
Of two terms or factors: to undo each other so that both drop out of the expression. Opposite terms like 3y and −3y cancel out when added, and a common factor of the numerator and denominator cancels out when a fraction is simplified.
例文
話し言葉 When you add these two equations, the 2y and the negative 2y cancel out, so you're left with just x's. 2 つの式を足すと、2y と −2y が消えて x だけが残るね。
話し言葉 In 3x over 4x, the x on top and the x on the bottom cancel out, and you get 3 over 4. 3x/4x では、分子の x と分母の x が消えて 3/4 になる。
書き言葉・答案 When the equations x + 2y = 7 and 3x − 2y = 5 are added, the y-terms cancel out, giving 4x = 12. 2 つの式 x + 2y = 7 と 3x − 2y = 5 を加えると、y の項が消えて 4x = 12 となる。
言い間違えやすいところ
- cancel out は「打ち消し合う」という意味で、主語は打ち消し合う項どうし（the y's cancel out、2y and −2y cancel out）。日本語の「消える」は、なくなった結果のほうを言う。
- 「y を消去する」と解く人を主語にして言うなら eliminate y（エントリ eliminate）。
- 約分で分子と分母の共通因数が消えるのも cancel と言う（エントリ reduce）。足して 0 になるときにも、割って 1 になるときにも使う。
