中学校学習指導要領解説の「加減法」は式を足す・引くという操作から付いた名前で、英語は文字を消去することから elimination method（method of elimination）と呼ぶ。OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry は addition method とも呼ぶ。
定義
連立方程式の 2 つの式を、必要なら何倍かしてから足したり引いたりして、1 つの文字を消去して解く方法。
A method for solving a system of equations: add or subtract the equations, after multiplying one or both by a number if needed, so that one variable is eliminated.
例文
話し言葉 The y's already have opposite coefficients, so the elimination method is the way to go: just add the equations. y の係数がもう符号違いだから、ここは加減法がいい。2 つの式を足すだけ。
書き言葉・答案 Solve the system 2x + 3y = 7, 4x − 3y = 5 by the elimination method. 連立方程式 2x + 3y = 7、4x − 3y = 5 を加減法で解け。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 代入法は substitution method（エントリ substitution-method）。加減法と代入法のどちらでも文字を「消去する」（eliminate、エントリ eliminate）が、elimination method と呼ぶのは加減法のほう。
- 行列を使うガウスの消去法（Gaussian elimination、エントリ gaussian-elimination）とは別の語。
