恒等式の両辺で、同じ次数の項の係数が等しいとおいて未知の係数を決める。
To find unknown coefficients by setting the coefficients of like powers on the two sides of an identity equal to each other.
例文
話し言葉 Now equate coefficients: the x² terms give A + B = 3. では係数を比較しよう。x² の項から A + B = 3。
書き言葉・答案 Find a, b, c so that x² + 2x + 3 = a(x − 1)² + b(x − 1) + c holds for all x, by equating coefficients. x² + 2x + 3 = a(x − 1)² + b(x − 1) + c が x についての恒等式となるように、係数を比較して a, b, c を定めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- OpenStax Calculus Volume 2（3.4 Partial Fractions）は部分分数分解の係数を決める手順を equate coefficients（method of equating coefficients）と書き、OpenStax Precalculus（7.4 Partial Fractions）・Algebra and Trigonometry（11.4）は compare the coefficients of both sides と書く。用例コーパスでは話し言葉・書き言葉とも少ない。
- 「係数比較法」と「数値代入法」は日本語の呼び名で、学習指導要領解説には出てこない（高等学校学習指導要領解説（数学II）は、恒等式の未定係数法を等式の証明とあわせて扱ってよいと書く）。英語はどちらも手順として言う（equate coefficients ／ plug in convenient values of x）。
