英語の error は符号の扱いが資料で分かれる。IM Grade 7（4.13 Measurement Error）は measurement error を測定値と実際の値の差の大きさ（正の数）とし、OpenStax Calculus Volume 2（3.6）は absolute error を |A − B| と定義する。OpenStax Calculus Volume 1（4.2）は、測定値 a + dx の dx を符号つきで measurement error と呼ぶ。日本語の誤差 = 近似値 − 真の値 は符号をもつ（pitfalls）。

近似値（測定値）と真の値との差。誤差 = 近似値 − 真の値 で求める。
The difference between an approximate or measured value and the true value: error = approximate value − true value.
例文
話し言葉 The true length is 12.6 centimeters and your measurement is 12.8, so the error is 0.2 centimeters. 本当の長さは 12.6 cm で、測定値は 12.8 cm だから、誤差は 0.2 cm。
書き言葉・答案 The number 3.786 is rounded to the nearest tenth, 3.8. Find the error in this approximation. 3.786 の小数第 2 位を四捨五入して 3.8 とした。この近似値の誤差を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 英語の error は「まちがい」の意味でもよく使うので、Find the error. だけだと「まちがいを見つけよ」ともとれる。誤差の意味では absolute error（OpenStax Calculus Volume 1）や rounding error（OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry）のように前に語を付けて言う。
- 統計の margin of error（誤差限界、エントリ error-bound）や標本誤差（sampling error、エントリ sampling-error）は別の用語。
- 誤差 = 近似値 − 真の値 なので、近似値が真の値より小さいと誤差は負の数になる（真の値 3.14159… に対して近似値 3.14 なら、誤差は約 −0.0016）。
