多角形の 1 つの辺と、となりの辺を延長した直線とがつくる、多角形の外側の角。1 つの頂点で、内角と外角の和は 180° になる。
The angle formed outside a polygon by one side and the extension of the side next to it. At each vertex, the interior angle and the exterior angle add up to 180°.
例文
話し言葉 Extend this side out past the vertex, and the angle you get outside the triangle is the exterior angle. この辺を頂点の先まで延ばすと、三角形の外側にできる角が外角。
書き言葉・答案 In △ABC, m∠A = 45° and m∠B = 70°. Find the measure of the exterior angle at vertex C. △ABC で ∠A = 45°、∠B = 70° のとき、頂点 C における外角の大きさを求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 三角形の外角が、となり合わない 2 つの内角の和に等しいことは exterior angle theorem（エントリ exterior-angle-theorem）。
- exterior は「外側の」の意味。平行線の alternate exterior angles（エントリ alternate-exterior-angles）の exterior は平行な 2 直線の外側のことで、多角形の外角とは指す角が違う。
- 外角をすべて足したものは exterior angle sum（エントリ sum-of-the-exterior-angles）。
