実数 x から整数部分を引いた値 x − ⌊x⌋。0 以上 1 未満になる。
The value x − ⌊x⌋ left after subtracting the integer part from a real number x; it is always at least 0 and less than 1.
例文
話し言葉 The integer part of √5 is 2, so its fractional part is √5 minus 2. √5 の整数部分は 2 だから、小数部分は √5 − 2。
書き言葉・答案 Let b be the fractional part of √3. Find the value of b² + 2b. √3 の小数部分を b とする。b² + 2b の値を求めよ。

言い間違えやすいところ
- 無理数の小数部分は 0.236… と書き並べず、√5 − 2 のように「元の数 − 整数部分」の式で表す。
- fractional part の fractional は「分数の」ではなく「1 に満たない端の」の意味。答えが分数になるわけではない。
- 負の数では流儀が分かれる。英語版 Wikipedia「Fractional part」（For negative numbers の節）は x − ⌊x⌋ 以外の流儀も挙げるので、負の数のときはどちらの意味かを書く（エントリ integer-part）。
