定義
数列 a₀, a₁, a₂, … の各項を係数にもつべき級数 a₀ + a₁x + a₂x² + ⋯ のこと。数列についての問題を、関数の計算に置き換えて解くのに使う。
The power series a₀ + a₁x + a₂x² + ⋯ whose coefficients are the terms of a sequence a₀, a₁, a₂, …. It turns questions about the sequence into algebra with functions.
例文
話し言葉 The generating function for 1, 1, 1, 1, and so on is one over one minus x. 1, 1, 1, 1, … の母関数は 1/(1 − x) だ。
書き言葉・答案 Find the generating function for the sequence 1, 2, 4, 8, … and write it in closed form. 数列 1, 2, 4, 8, … の母関数を求め、分数式の形で表せ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 日本語では「母関数」と「生成関数」の 2 つの名前があるが、英語はどちらも generating function。
- 母関数では x に値を代入せず、係数を並べる入れ物として扱うことが多い。収束するかどうかは問題にしない（形式的べき級数）。
- 確率・統計の moment generating function（積率母関数）は別物。用例コーパスでは書き言葉に多く（すべて MIT の講義ノート）、話し言葉にはほとんど出てこない。Levin の本では 6.1 Generating Functions に 95 件。
