x → ∞ または x → −∞ のとき、グラフが限りなく近づく水平な直線 y = b。分数関数では、分子と分母の次数を比べて求める。
A horizontal line y = b that a graph approaches as x → ∞ or x → −∞. For a rational function, you find it by comparing the degrees of the numerator and the denominator.
例文
話し言葉 Same degree on top and bottom, so the horizontal asymptote is the ratio of the leading coefficients: y = 2/3. 分子と分母の次数が同じだから、水平漸近線は最高次の係数の比で y = 2/3。
書き言葉・答案 Find the horizontal asymptote of f(x) = (4x² − 1)/(2x² + 3x). f(x) = (4x² − 1)/(2x² + 3x) の水平漸近線を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- グラフは水平漸近線と交わることもある。交わらないのは垂直漸近線（エントリ vertical-asymptote）。
- 分数関数では、分母の次数のほうが高ければ y = 0、等しければ最高次の係数の比。分子の次数が分母よりちょうど 1 高いときは斜め漸近線（エントリ slant-asymptote）になる。
- 分数関数だけでなく指数関数にもある。y = 2ˣ の水平漸近線は y = 0。
