反比例 y = a/x のグラフのように、2 つに分かれた曲線が組になった形の曲線。二次曲線としては、2 つの定点（焦点）からの距離の差が一定である点の集まり（日本語版 Wikipedia「双曲線」。学習指導要領解説（数学C）は双曲線を二次式で表される曲線として扱う）。
A curve with two separate branches, like the graph of y = a/x. In Precalculus it is defined by two fixed points (the foci): a point is on the hyperbola when the difference of its distances to the foci is constant.
例文
話し言葉 The graph of y = 6/x is a hyperbola, so it comes in two separate pieces: one in Quadrant I and one in Quadrant III. y = 6/x のグラフは双曲線だから、第 1 象限と第 3 象限の 2 つの部分に分かれている。
書き言葉・答案 Find the vertices and foci of the hyperbola x²/9 − y²/16 = 1. 双曲線 x²/9 − y²/16 = 1 の頂点と焦点を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 中 1 の反比例 y = a/x のグラフも、数 C の二次曲線 x²/a² − y²/b² = 1 も、同じ hyperbola。複数形は hyperbolas。
- 形容詞 hyperbolic は「双曲線の」の意味。hyperbolic functions（双曲線関数、エントリ hyperbolic-functions）は hyperbola とは別の語。
- 読み方は hy-PER-bo-la（第 2 音節を強く読む。Merriam-Webster: hī-ˈpər-bə-lə）。綴りの似た hyperbole（誇張法。hī-ˈpər-bə-lē）は別の語。
