角柱や角錐の面のうち、底面以外の面。角柱の側面は長方形（傾いた角柱では平行四辺形）、角錐の側面は三角形になる。
A face of a prism or pyramid that is not a base. The lateral faces of a prism are rectangles (parallelograms if the prism is oblique), and those of a pyramid are triangles.

言い間違えやすいところ
- lateral は「横の」という意味で、強勢は最初の音節（LAT-。Merriam-Webster: ˈla-tə-rəl）。円柱・円錐の側面は平らな面（face）ではなく曲面なので、lateral surface と言う。
- 底面は形で決まり、図の向きでは決まらない。角柱が横に倒れた図では、下に接している面は側面で、両端の合同な 2 つの面が底面になる。
