立体の側面全体の面積。底面の面積は入れない。

例文
話し言葉 Lateral area is just the sides, so don't add in the top and the bottom. 側面積は側面だけだから、上と下の面は足さないでね。
書き言葉・答案 Find the lateral area of a cylinder with a radius of 3 cm and a height of 10 cm. Leave your answer in terms of π. 底面の半径が 3 cm、高さが 10 cm の円柱の側面積を求めよ。ただし、円周率は π とする。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 表面積（エントリ surface-area）= 側面積 + 底面積。角柱・円柱は底面が 2 つあるので底面積を 2 倍して足す。問題が lateral area（側面積）と surface area（表面積）のどちらを聞いているかを確かめる。
- 円柱の側面を開くと長方形になり、その横の長さは底面の円周 2πr なので、円柱の側面積は 2πrh。
- 角柱の側面をつなげて開くと、横の長さが底面の周の長さに等しい長方形になる。だから角柱の側面積は、底面の周の長さ × 高さで求められる。
