定義
「p ならば q」と「q ならば r」がともに真のとき、「p ならば r」も真であると結論する推論の規則。
The rule of inference that if p → q and q → r are both true, then p → r is also true.
例文
話し言葉 If it rains, the game is canceled, and if the game is canceled, we have practice. So by the law of syllogism, if it rains, we have practice. 雨なら試合は中止、試合が中止なら練習がある。だから三段論法で、雨なら練習がある。
書き言葉・答案 Use the law of syllogism to write a conclusion from the two statements: If x > 5, then x > 3. If x > 3, then x > 1. 次の 2 つの命題から、三段論法を使って結論を書け。x > 5 ならば x > 3。x > 3 ならば x > 1。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 日本の数学で言う三段論法（p ⇒ q、q ⇒ r なら p ⇒ r）は、英語では law of syllogism（論理学では hypothetical syllogism）。
- 日本語版 Wikipedia の「三段論法」に対応する英語版の記事 Syllogism は、アリストテレスの定言三段論法（categorical syllogism）の記事で、この規則ではない。
- 用例コーパス・IM・Levin とも law of syllogism は出てこない。CK-12 Geometry は 2.7 Deductive Reasoning に 2 件。
