名詞 別の言い方 alphabetical order, dictionary order
見出しは英語版 Wikipedia の記事名 Lexicographic order（「辞書式順序」の langlink 先）。OpenStax Prealgebra は alphabetical order と書く（1 件、語を並べる順序として）。Levin の Discrete Mathematics は、1 語の中の文字の順を in alphabetical order と書き（3.3・3.4・3.5）、名前を並べる順にも使う（3.9）。用例コーパスでは alphabetical order も少なく（話し言葉は MIT OCW・Khan Academy）、lexicographic order と dictionary order は参照（CED・OpenStax・IM・CK-12・Levin）にも用例コーパスにも出てこない。
定義
文字や数字の列を、1 文字目で比べ、同じなら 2 文字目で比べ…と、辞書の見出しと同じ規則で並べる順序。
The order used in a dictionary: compare two strings by their first symbols, and if those are the same, by their second symbols, and so on.
例文
話し言葉 Let's write them in lexicographic order, the way a dictionary would: ABC, ACB, BAC, and so on. 辞書式順序で書き出そう。辞書と同じように ABC, ACB, BAC, … だ。
書き言葉・答案 All arrangements of the letters a, b, c, d, e are listed in alphabetical order. Which arrangement is 50th? a, b, c, d, e の 5 文字を並べたものすべてを辞書式順序に並べる。50 番目は何か。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 桁数が同じ数字の並び（123, 132, 213, …）なら、辞書式順序は小さい順と同じ。in increasing order（小さい順）と言い換えられる。
- 「〇番目の文字列」を求める問題は、先頭の文字ごとに何通りあるか（4! = 24 など）を数えて絞り込む。
