分野名としての「場合の数」は counting（OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry の章 Sequences, Probability and Counting Theory、節 Counting Principles）。個数としての「場合の数」は the number of ways（to …）で、「何通り」は How many ways …? と言う。用例コーパスと参照の number of cases は症例数や箱の数の意味で、場合の数の意味では出てこない（日本語版 Wikipedia「場合の数」は英語を number of cases と書く）。
