数と文字の掛け算だけでできている式。3x²、ab のほか、−5 や x のように 1 つの数や文字だけの式も単項式とする。
An expression that is a number, a variable, or a product of numbers and variables, such as 3x², ab, or −5. A monomial has exactly one term.
例文
話し言葉 5x squared is a monomial, but once you add another term, like 5x squared plus 1, it's not a monomial anymore. 5x² は単項式。でも 5x² + 1 みたいに項をもう 1 つ足したら、もう単項式じゃない。

言い間違えやすいところ
- 中学校学習指導要領解説は「単項式と多項式の意味」と対比で挙げ、日本語版 Wikipedia「多項式」は「多項式」を単項式でない整式の意味で用いる流儀があると書く。英語の polynomial は monomial も含む（エントリ polynomial）。
- mono- は「1 つの」の意味。項が 2 つの式は binomial（二項式）、3 つの式は trinomial（三項式）と、項の数で呼び名が変わる。
- x/3 は (1/3)x なので単項式だが、3/x のように文字で割る式は単項式ではない。
