見出しの「符号を変えた逆数」は学習指導要領解説に無い、本プロジェクトの訳語。日本では垂直条件を「傾きの積が −1」（m₁m₂ = −1）と言い、この数に名前を付けない。OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry は、垂直な直線の一方の傾きは他方の negative reciprocal だと説明する。

0 でない数 a に対する −1/a。逆数をとって符号を変えた数で、2/3 に対しては −3/2。
For a nonzero number a, the number −1/a: flip the number and change its sign. For example, the negative reciprocal of 2/3 is −3/2.
例文
話し言葉 Perpendicular slopes are negative reciprocals, so if one line has a slope of 2/3, the other one has a slope of negative 3/2. 垂直な直線の傾きは互いに符号を変えた逆数だから、一方の傾きが 2/3 なら、もう一方の傾きは −3/2。
書き言葉・答案 The slope of a line perpendicular to y = −4x + 1 is the negative reciprocal of −4. Find this slope, and write an equation of the perpendicular line through (8, 3). 直線 y = −4x + 1 に垂直な直線の傾きは、−4 の符号を変えた逆数である。この傾きを求め、点 (8, 3) を通り y = −4x + 1 に垂直な直線の式を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- negative は「負の」ではなく「符号を変えた」の意味。負の数の negative reciprocal は正になる（−4 なら 1/4）。
- opposite reciprocal とも言う。opposite は符号を変えた数のこと（エントリ opposite）。
- 傾きが negative reciprocal になるのは、垂直な 2 直線のどちらも垂直・水平でないときだけ。水平な直線（傾き 0）には逆数がなく、垂直な直線の傾きは定義されない（エントリ perpendicular-lines）。
