直線の傾きぐあいを表す数。直線上の 2 点について、y の増加量を x の増加量でわった値。
A number that measures how steep a line is: take any two points on the line and divide the vertical change by the horizontal change, often said as "rise over run."
例文
話し言葉 Slope is rise over run, so up 4 and over 2 gives you a slope of 2. 傾きは「上がった分 ÷ 横に進んだ分」。4 上がって右に 2 進むから、傾きは 2。
書き言葉・答案 Find the slope of the line passing through (1, −2) and (4, 7). 2 点 (1, −2)、(4, 7) を通る直線の傾きを求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 傾きは m で表す（y = mx + b）。中学校学習指導要領解説の y = ax + b の a に当たる。
- rise over run は「上がった分（rise）÷ 横に進んだ分（run）」。下がるときは rise が負になり、傾きも負になる。
- 一次関数では、傾きと変化の割合（エントリ rate-of-change）は同じ値。
