定義
y が x の一次式 y = ax + b（a ≠ 0）で表される関数。グラフは直線になる。
A function whose rule is y = mx + b. Its graph is a straight line; m gives the slope, and b is the value of y when x = 0.
例文
話し言葉 A linear function has a constant rate of change, so its graph is always a straight line. 一次関数は変化の割合が一定だから、グラフはいつも直線になる。
書き言葉・答案 Write an equation for the linear function whose graph has a slope of −3 and a y-intercept of 5. グラフの傾きが −3、切片が 5 である一次関数の式を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 英語では y = mx + b と書く。m が傾き（slope）、b が y 切片（y-intercept）で、中学校学習指導要領解説の y = ax + b の a が m に当たる。
- 日本語版 Wikipedia「一次関数」は、実際に一次であることを求めるときは a ≠ 0 とし、a = 0（定数関数、エントリ constant-function）も含めて呼ぶ流儀もあると書く。
- 「一次」は英語で linear（エントリ linear）。
