x がどんな値をとっても、y がいつも同じ値 c になる関数 y = c。グラフは x 軸に平行な直線。
A function whose output is the same number for every input, y = c. Its graph is a horizontal line with a slope of 0.
例文
話し言葉 y = 4 is a constant function: whatever x is, y is always 4. y = 4 は定数関数。x が何でも、y はいつも 4。
書き言葉・答案 Graph the constant function y = −2 and state its slope. 定数関数 y = −2 のグラフをかき、その傾きを答えよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- グラフは x 軸に平行な直線で、英語では horizontal line（水平な線）と言う。傾きは 0。
- x = 3 のような y 軸に平行な直線（縦の直線）は、x の関数ではない。傾きも定義されない（undefined）。
- 日本語版 Wikipedia「一次関数」は、一次関数を y = ax + b（a ≠ 0）とするときは定数関数を含めず、a = 0 も含める流儀もあると書く（エントリ linear-function）。
