日本語版 Wikipedia「一次関数」は y = ax + b の b（直線と y 軸との交点の座標）を y 切片、あるいは単に切片と呼び、センター試験の問題文（平成 31 年度 数学Ⅰ）も直線について「切片が −15」と書く。OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry は y を付けて y-intercept と言い、x 軸と交わる点は x-intercept（エントリ x-intercept）と言い分ける（回帰直線では OpenStax Introductory Statistics が単に the intercept とも言う）。
定義
直線やグラフが y 軸と交わる点の y 座標。y = ax + b では b。
The y-coordinate of the point where a line or graph crosses the y-axis. In y = mx + b, it is b.
例文
話し言葉 To get the y-intercept, set x equal to 0; that's the point where the graph hits the y-axis. 切片を求めるには x に 0 を代入する。そこがグラフと y 軸との交点。
書き言葉・答案 Find the slope and the y-intercept of the line 2x + y = 6. 直線 2x + y = 6 の傾きと切片を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 日本語の「切片」は y 切片のことだが、英語では y を付けて y-intercept と言う。x 軸と交わる点は x-intercept（エントリ x-intercept）。
- y-intercept は x = 0 を、x-intercept は y = 0 を代入して求める。取り違えやすい。
