数列の n 番目の項 aₙ。n の式で表したものを一般項という。
The term aₙ in the nth position of a sequence; written as a formula in n, it gives every term.
例文
話し言葉 Plug n = 10 into the nth term to get the tenth term. 第 n 項に n = 10 を入れれば第 10 項になる。
書き言葉・答案 Write a formula for the nth term of the sequence 5, 8, 11, 14, …. 数列 5, 8, 11, 14, … の第 n 項を式で表せ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- nth は「エンス」と読む（Merriam-Webster: ˈen(t)th）。the nth term = a sub n。
- 数列の一般項（センター試験 平成 26 年度 数学II・数学B の「数列 {aₙ} の一般項を求めよう」は aₙ を n の式で表すこと）は、英語でも general term（エントリ general-term）。OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry（13.1）・Intermediate Algebra（12.1）は the general term (nth term) と書く。n の式そのものは、OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry は explicit formula、Calculus Volume 2（5.1）は an explicit formula for the nth term と書く（find-the-nth-term を参照）。
