定義
反射律・反対称律・推移律をみたす二項関係のこと。どの 2 つの元も比べられるとは限らない点が、全順序と違う。
A relation that is reflexive, antisymmetric, and transitive. Unlike a total order, it can have pairs of elements that are not comparable.
例文
話し言葉 Divisibility is a partial order on the positive integers, but 2 and 3 aren't comparable, since neither one divides the other. 割り切る関係は正の整数上の半順序だが、2 と 3 はどちらも他方を割り切らないので比べられない。
書き言葉・答案 Show that ⊆ is a partial order on the power set of {a, b, c}, and find two elements that are not comparable. {a, b, c} のべき集合上の関係 ⊆ が半順序であることを示し、比較できない 2 つの元を挙げよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 反対称律は antisymmetric。対称律（symmetric）の否定ではなく、a ⪯ b かつ b ⪯ a なら a = b という条件。
- 本によっては、反射律の代わりに a ⪯ a が成り立たない狭義の順序（< 型、strict partial order）を partial order と呼ぶ。定義を確かめる。
- 半順序が定められた集合は partially ordered set（英語版 Wikipedia の記事名）。用例コーパスでは話し言葉はすべて MIT OCW、書き言葉はすべて MIT の講義ノート。Levin の本では partial order と partial ordering が 3 件ずつ。
