集合 A のすべての部分集合を要素とする集合のこと。空集合と A 自身も含み、A の要素が n 個ならべき集合の要素は 2ⁿ 個ある。
The set of all subsets of a set A, including the empty set and A itself. If A has n elements, its power set has 2ⁿ elements.
例文
話し言葉 The power set always contains the empty set and the whole set, so don't forget those two. べき集合には空集合と集合全体が必ず入るので、その 2 つを忘れないように。
書き言葉・答案 Let A = {1, 2, 3}. List the elements of the power set of A. How many elements does it have? A = {1, 2, 3} とする。A のべき集合の要素をすべて書き出せ。要素は何個あるか。
言い間違えやすいところ
- べき集合の要素は集合（A の部分集合）で、A の要素そのものではない。{1} ∈ 𝒫(A) だが、1 ∈ 𝒫(A) ではない。
- 記号は 𝒫(A) や 2^A など、本によって違う。
- 用例コーパスでは書き言葉に少しあるだけ（すべて MIT の講義ノート）で、話し言葉には出てこない。Levin の本では 5.1 Sets に 4 件。
