原像

日本の中学では「もとの図形」と言い、原像という言葉は写像（大学）で使う。英語の Geometry では変換する前の点や図形を preimage と呼ぶ。CK-12 Geometry は preimage と呼ぶ（8.17 Composite Transformations ほか、57 件）。
式と読み方

定義
変換で移す前の、もとの点や図形。A′ が像のとき、A がその原像である。
The original point or figure before a transformation is applied. If A′ is the image, then A is its preimage.
例文
話し言葉 The preimage is the figure you start with, and the image is what you get after the transformation. もとの図形は移動する前の図形で、移した図形は移動した後に得られる図形だ。
書き言葉・答案 Point A′(−3, 5) is the image of point A under a reflection across the y-axis. Find the coordinates of the preimage A. 点 A を y 軸に関して対称移動すると点 A′(−3, 5) に移る。点 A の座標を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 英語の問題文では「もとの図形」を preimage と書く。ハイフンを付けた pre-image もあり、CK-12 Geometry では preimage 57 件、pre-image 1 件。
- 大学では関数 f と集合 B について、f(x) が B に入る x 全体 f⁻¹(B) を B の preimage（逆像）と呼ぶ。f に逆関数が無くても使う。
- 用例コーパスには話・書とも出てこない。Nicholson では 7.1 Examples and Elementary Properties に 1 件。
