日本の中1 は平行移動・回転移動・対称移動をまとめて「移動」と呼ぶ（中学校学習指導要領解説の「図形の移動」）。英語の rigid transformation（rigid motion）は距離を変えない変換で、映進（glide reflection）も含む。
定義
図形上のどの 2 点の距離も変えない変換。平行移動・回転移動・対称移動とそれらの組み合わせがあり、移した図形はもとの図形と合同になる。
A transformation that preserves the distance between every pair of points, such as a translation, a rotation, a reflection, or a sequence of these. The image is always congruent to the original figure.
例文
話し言葉 A rigid transformation doesn't change any lengths or angles, so the image is congruent to the original. 合同変換では長さも角も変わらないから、移した図形はもとの図形と合同だ。
書き言葉・答案 Describe a sequence of rigid transformations that takes △ABC onto △DEF. △ABC を △DEF に重ねる移動の組み合わせを説明せよ。

言い間違えやすいところ
- IM Geometry は、一方の図形を rigid transformation の組み合わせで他方に重ねられることを合同の定義にしている。合同条件（SSS・SAS・ASA）もこの定義から証明する。
- 拡大・縮小（dilation）は長さを変えるので rigid transformation に入らない。
- IM では rigid transformation（97 件。Grade 8 と Geometry の glossary の見出し）と rigid motion（61 件。Geometry のみ）を両方使う。用例コーパスでは話し言葉に rigid transformation が多く（すべて Khan Academy の中学の講義）、rigid motion はほとんど出てこない（3Blue1Brown）。
