データの最大値から最小値を引いた値。データの散らばりの大きさを表す目安の 1 つ。
The difference between the greatest and the least values in a data set. It gives a rough idea of the spread of the data.
例文
話し言葉 The top score was 95 and the lowest was 62, so the range is 33 points. 最高点が 95 点で最低点が 62 点だから、範囲は 33 点。
書き言葉・答案 The numbers of books read by eight students last month were 3, 7, 2, 9, 4, 6, 1, and 5. Find the range of the data. 8 人の生徒が先月読んだ本の冊数は 3, 7, 2, 9, 4, 6, 1, 5 冊であった。このデータの範囲を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 関数の値域も英語は range で、同じ単語（エントリ range、domain-and-range）。データの range は 1 つの数（最大値 − 最小値）で、値域は値の集まり。
- 四分位範囲は interquartile range（IQR、エントリ interquartile-range）。範囲は最大値と最小値だけで決まるので、外れ値が 1 つあると大きく変わる。
- 動詞の range は「（値が）〜から〜にわたる」の意味で、The scores range from 62 to 95. のように使う。
