科学的記数法

日本の中 3 では、近似値を（整数部分が 1 桁の数）×（10 の累乗）の形で書くことを学ぶが、この書き方に名前を付けない。理科では「指数表記」と言うこともある。英語では scientific notation という名前で、OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry は 1 ≦ |a| < 10、n は整数という条件で定義する。
式と読み方
a times ten to the n, where the absolute value of a is greater than or equal to one and less than ten
定義
数を a × 10ⁿ（1 ≦ |a| < 10、n は整数）の形で書く書き方。とても大きい数や小さい数を短く書ける。
A way of writing a number as a × 10^n, where 1 ≤ |a| < 10 and n is an integer. It is a short way to write very large or very small numbers.
例文
話し言葉 In scientific notation, 3,200,000 is 3.2 times 10 to the sixth. 3,200,000 を科学的記数法で書くと、3.2 × 10⁶ だ。
書き言葉・答案 Write 0.00045 in scientific notation. 0.00045 を科学的記数法で表せ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 英国では standard form と言うが、米国の standard form は別の意味（直線の式 Ax + By = C など、エントリ standard-form-of-a-line）。
- a は 1 ≦ |a| < 10 でなければならない。32 × 10⁵ は値は正しくても scientific notation ではなく、3.2 × 10⁶ と書く。
- 1 より小さい数は指数が負になる（0.00045 = 4.5 × 10⁻⁴）。10⁻⁴ は ten to the negative fourth と読む。
